Vacationing With Your Pet Cat
By R. G. Kirk |
| |
Because many felines are very
attached to their own territory, a change in
surroundings may at first be intimidating. If you
enjoy traveling, and desire to bring your cat along
with you, it is often best to begin by taking your
pet on outings from the time she is a kitten. This
will make her more comfortable with being out of
familiar surroundings. Take her along with you on
brief trips to the library or pet store. This will
enable your kitten to become accustomed to the
motion of a vehicle and the new sights, smells, and
sounds she may experience.
A good quality pet carrier is a must. It should be
sturdy, well ventilated, leak proof, and easy for
your pet to see out of. Don’t only use the carrier
when you travel. Enable her to spend time inside it
while at home as well. In time, she will become
comfortable with her carrier, and will recognize it
as a part of yours and her own territory. When she
travels, place a favorite blanket inside, one that
smells like home and reminds her that she is safe.
When traveling in the car, secure the carrier with a
seatbelt, or take other precautions to ensure that
her carrier does not become unbalanced. In the event
that the driver may need to break sharply, the
carrier must remain in a fixed position.
If your vehicle is large enough, you may wish to
purchase a carrier spacious enough to contain a
small pan of cat litter. This will enable you to
drive greater distances with your pet.
Before your departure, make sure that your cat’s
collar and identification tags are secure, and her
vaccinations are current. Be certain that your pet
is healthy enough to travel. Speak with your
veterinarian if you have any concerns.
After you depart, your cat will require food and
water at regular intervals. She will be more
comfortable if her home routine is adhered to. If
she becomes anxious, she may find the sound of your
voice soothing.
Once you arrive at your vacation destination, place
her in a quiet room while you unpack. Leave her
carrier door open, so that she may return to the
safety of her carrier if she becomes uncomfortable
with her surroundings. Give her time to explore the
sights and scents of her new location. Provide her
scratching post or other toys that she recognizes
from home. Enable her to explore when she is ready.
It may take your pet several days to become
accustomed to your vacation spot.
Take the time to explain to your pet that she is
safe in this new location. Although your cat may not
understand all the words, she may find the sound and
tone of your voice reassuring.
Certain hotels, resorts, bed and breakfasts, and
other vacation spots are more pet friendly than
others. If you require assistance in selecting a
suitable destination for you and your cat or dog,
please speak with a Cruise Cat travel agent. They
will help you to determine an ideal vacation when
traveling with a pet.
