Health Benefits of Traveling With A Pet

By Dr. R. G. Kirk

As more and more research comes to light, it is becoming increasingly well known that pet owners experience mental, emotional, and physical health benefits as a result of their four footed companions. Pets fill us with laughter at their antics, and provide companionship when we are lonely. They are non-confrontational, loving, and are often instrumental in teaching empathy to young children.

Taking a pet along with you on a vacation can often compound the restorative and healing benefits of a relaxing trip. The act of stroking and brushing your pet can stabilize your heart rate and cause a decrease in blood pressure. In addition, with your pet dog or cat present, you will always have someone to talk to, or to spend time with. You will have fun as you share the exciting sights, smells and sounds of a fascinating new location.

Pets are also wonderful at decreasing the levels of tension between other humans. They will put your other traveling companions at ease during times of stress, awkwardness, or unanticipated delays.

Another benefit of traveling with your pet is that as you take care of your pet, you are compelled to maintain a healthy routine. Retaining your pet’s schedule encourages you to keep healthy hours, causing you to eat and sleep at normal intervals, even while away from home.

A final benefit of traveling with a pet is that many pets encourage you to exercise. Dogs require regular walks and cats often enjoy interactive playtime. Many of us enjoy dining out and sampling the local cuisine while on vacation. What better way to work off the extra calories than exercising with your favorite pet? The routine physical activity will also strengthen your, skeletal muscles, and bones.

As long as care is given to select a suitable destination for both you and your playful pooch or frisky feline, traveling with a pet can be both a healthy and richly rewarding experience.
